Sewing Inspiration; new challenge: "Obviously Not Off The Rack!"

Updated: Jan 5

Let’s do 2025 Creatively!

Out with fast fashion and in with fashion statements!

2025 is all about wearable art – you know, the not-off-the-rack fashion.

Let’s be honest: the world doesn’t need another cookie-cutter, polyester-blend, boring basic garment rolling off a conveyor belt. What the world does need? More fabulous, one-of-a-kind creations made by people like us—those who see a bolt of fabric not as a potential bedspread but as an opportunity.

This year, I’m inviting you to join me on a year-long adventure into the wonderful and wildly creative world of sewing. We’re kicking fast fashion to the curb and saying a big, bold “yes!” to projects that showcase your personality, your quirks, and maybe even your love for the leftover fabric bin. After all, why settle for mass-produced when you can whip up something so uniquely you that people stop you in the street to ask, “Where did you get that?” (Your answer: I made it!)

Spliced dress with bold color choices!

Throughout 2025, this blog will be your guide, your cheerleader, and occasionally your partner-in-crime as we tackle everything from upcycling thrifted treasures into runway-worthy looks to sewing with those “challenging” fabrics (looking at you, sequins). Expect plenty of inspiration, the occasional tutorial, and a lot of laughs as we dive headfirst into projects that are anything but off the rack.

So grab your fabric shears, clear off your sewing table, and let’s get started.

Take the creativity challenge with me – once a month lets sew a new wearable art piece! and learn some new creative techniques that will inspire you again and again.

Because here’s the thing: sewing isn’t just about making clothes, it’s about making statements.

Who’s ready to sew something spectacular?

Projects on my wish list:

  • Birds on a Wire

  • Triangle welt pockets on a skirt.

  • Magazine tear sheets

  • Jean upcycling

  • Splicing

  • Ribbon embroidery

  • Graphic border print pattern on the hem of a skirt.

WHAT'S ON YOUR LIST?

This year lets make it happen! Get out your vision boards and pick a project!

Happy Sewing,

Shawnelle
